ABOUT

Sarah Kelk is a Melbourne based contemporary painter known for her bold and emotive works that explore themes of nature, identity, and personal narrative. Her practice examines processes and influences simultaneously and harmoniously, connecting abstraction with figuration in a new narrative that evokes emotional depth and movement. Energised blocks of colour are central to her work, and although traces of structure appear, references to nature, decorative arts, and architecture are visible in a less ordered energy.

Her distinctive style is characterised by vibrant and gestural brush stokes and an intuitive approach to composition. Her works range from large-scale canvases to intimate works on paper, each conveying a sense of fluidity and spontaneity. Through her use of colour and texture, she seeks to capture the essence of fleeting moments, focusing on the way light, atmosphere and form can transform the way we perceive our surroundings.

Sarah is based in Melbourne, Australia, but grew up in the South Island of New Zealand. She has exhibited her work both nationally and internationally in a number of solo and group exhibitions, with her work being held in numerous private collections. In addition to her studio practice, Sarah has worked across the art and design industries in curation, arts management, interior design and community engagement, often mentoring emerging artists and participating in collaborative projects.
